Item 1 – Apologies

There were no Apologies

Item 2 – Introductions and Town Hall Tour

Yth Cllr Matty leaded the Youth Council around the town hall including the offices and Mayor’s Parlour that are upstairs.

Item 3 – Chair’s announcements

Yth Cllr Emma met Mr David Cameron to discuss the Youth Council and its history, present and future. This was in the local papers including the Oxford Mail. Yth Cllr Emma was also pictured in the local papers as the Town Council have been granted the Playbuilder funding that was originally granted but became in jeopardy because of the government cuts. Phase one of the Recreation ground refurbishment starts this month.

Item 4 – Treasurer’s Report

CYC have not spent any of their funds to date.

Item 5 – Charity of the Year

The CYC were asked for any suggestions as to what charity they think the money we raise this year should go to. Yth Cllr George suggested Helen and Douglas house as it was local to Carterton and was involved in helping the Youth. The rest of the council agreed and the vote was unanimous therefore Helen and Douglas House are the Charity of the year and any fundraising we carry out will go to them at the end of the year including money from the upcoming Xmas lights.

Item 6 – Website

CYC have a website at www.cartertonyouthcouncil.wordpress.com. The aim of the website is to promote the different activities that are available for Young People in the local area. This goal has not been met yet however the website is a good point of information about the CYC including who represents what organisations and the upcoming events of the CYC.

Item 7 – Bright Ideas Initiative

Last year, the CYC decided that they should have an application form of some sort written up in which any Young Person or organisation involved with young people could complete and submit to bid for grants for any activity or project within Carterton that involves young people.  Yth Cllr Matty and Town Clerk Janet Eustace prepared a draft copy for the youth council to have a look at and comment on. Yth Cllr Matty suggested perhaps changing the name from ‘The CYC Bright Ideas Initiative’ to something more relative to the town and something that stands out more to young people. No other suggestions were made so the CYC were asked to go away and have a think and bring any new ideas to the next meeting.

Item 8 – Christmas Lights Fair Rota

Yth Cllr Rosie Herridge, Chairperson of the Xmas lights sub-committee, prepared a blank rota for the running of the Xmas lights stall on 3rd November from 4.30pm (setup time) to 8pm (finish). The lights will be turned on at 6pm. This was sent around the table for anyone who is willing to help out on the night to fill in.

Yth Cllr Rosie Herridge explained the outcome of the sub-committee meeting held towards the end of October. The CYC will be holding a stall with three different games on to raise money for charity. These are:

  • Guess the name of the Teddy
  • Guess how many sweets are in the jar
  • Lucky Dip

A note of thanks was made for Mr Bulley who has donated a teddy bear for the stall.

Item 9 – Gazebo

Yth Cllr Rosie Herridge explained that she and Yth Cllr Matty Yallop attended a town council meeting to propose the purchase of a gazebo with sides and weights for use by the youth council and other local organisations. The proposal was an estimate of £100 however the town councillors decided that £100 was not enough for a sturdy gazebo that is expected to last several years. The outcome was that a limit of £250 was set to purchase a gazebo that Town Cllr Ashley Farmer would purchase for us. A letter of thanks will be written to Town Cllr Ashley Farmer for purchasing the gazebo for us.

Item 10 – Lantern Procession

Heather McCulloch has contacted the CYC regarding a Lantern Procession which is due to take place on 8th December 2010. The CYC discussed the idea and decided that they would go back to the organisations they represent and spread the word of the event.

Item 11 – CYC Photos

John Radburn was invited to the meeting to take photographs of the CYC which will be published on the CYC website and used for publication purposes.

Item 12 – Time and Date of Next Meeting

The next meeting will take place on Wednesday 5th January 2011 at 4.15pm for officers and 4.30pm for the Full Youth Council.

Item 13 – AOB

Yth Cllr Lilly McGuigan bought in some pictures of play gym equipment in a play park she went to and suggested something similar for the new recreation group play park that is due to start being installed this month. The CYC liked the idea.

Mentor Carole MacRae spoke about a group of people who have recently completed a basic computer skills course and suggested that if anyone had a spare hour or so on a regular basis that it would be a nice gesture to meet this group of people to update them on the skills they learnt on their course and help them with anything they are unsure of.

Mentor Carole MacRae also mentioned that short hand is a very good technique to use when in an interview because the interviewee usually thinks twice about what they are going to say when they see someone taking notes. She said that she was willing to run a course to teach anyone who was interested and to get in touch with her if you are interested.

Mentor Maddy Radburn spoke about the Carterton Lions being involved with the organisation of the annual 10K Run and that they were looking at running a shorter fun run for the younger members of the community and would CYC be interested in getting involved in the project.

Yth Cllr Matty Yallop suggested that as the CYC is an advisory committee to the town council that the January meeting should be an ideas workshop in which each Youth Councillor approached their organisation for ideas in which the town could be improved for young people. Then at the meeting the CYC would discuss each idea and pick the ones they think would benefit the town ready to propose to the Town Council. The idea was agreed and set for the January Agenda.
